Will Howells apologise?

by Chris Ames posted at 2007-05-03 13:53 last modified 2007-11-08 14:03

I've been following up my Comment is Free piece Unlucky Kim, about how Foreign Office minister Kim Howells misled Parliament by falsely claiming that John Williams had told the Hutton Inquiry about his draft of the dossier.

I contacted the Foreign Office press office to make sure that Dr Howells was aware of what he had done and to enquire when he might take appropriate action under the ministerial code, e.g. to correct "any inadvertent error at the earliest opportunity". They gave me the usual line about what was said at Hutton, without addressing the specific point, but promised to pass my comments on.

Rather feeling that I had been fobbed off, I emailed the Cabinet Secretary, who is responsible for advising ministers on the Code, so that he can ensure that Howells takes appropriate action.
